A JOYFUL MEAL
El Limonal is a community of approximately 500 people who live in extreme poverty in Chinandega, Nicaragua. El Limonal is also the city’s informal garbage dump site and the community lives at a short distance from trash and all types of residue. As a result of living at such close proximity to the dump site, these families are prone to suffer from health hazards such as intestinal and digestive problems as well as respiratory diseases stemming from smoke and garbage inhalation.
The children of El Limonal were severely malnourished and were not receiving the nutritional intake required in order to grow at a healthy rate. Since the year 2011, ANF in alliance with Life Outreach International, Food For The Poor and Feed My Starving Children was able to provide hundreds of children with a daily nutritious meal of rice, beans, milk, cereals and MannaPack (fortified soy) at children’s feeding centers in the community. Every day from Monday through Friday, 180 children happily gather to enjoy a healthy and warm meal that helps them grow and flourish.
This year, thanks to the support of BAC Florida, we were able to purchase more food to complement meals at the children's feeding centers, as well as tables, chairs, and various kitchen utensils . The centers also received hygiene kits and garbage disposal units. The children acquired knowledge on nutrition and preventive measures such as proper hand washing.
We are able to provide meals with the generous support of our strategic partners who believe in nurturing Nicaraguan children, so they can have an opportunity for a better future.
This holiday season, we are grateful for all our donors and partners who make it possible for ANF to feed the hungry and bring warmth to their hearts.
EL CASTILLO COFFEE
ANF in alliance with Food For The Poor, launched the “El Castillo Coffee Project” in Las Sabanas, Madriz. The project provides 25 families with the necessary equipment for proper postharvest management allowing them to obtain better quality coffee and therefore the possibility of receiving a higher buying price in the highly competitive international market. Coffee farmers will also receive technical assistance and training to improve their coffee production through specialized opportunity areas.
Claudia García, a beneficiary of the project, hosted the launch event at her coffee farm Miramar. ANF, Cooperativa 5 de Junio and local authorities participated in the activities where the beneficiaries expressed hope for cultivating change for their families and enthusiasm for the harvest equipment they received.
UN PLATO, UNA SONRISA
For 15 years, the program "Un Plato, Una Sonrisa" from ANF and the Coca-Cola System has brought smiles to 149,980 Nicaraguan children by providing them with a daily nutritious meal in 754 schools and feeding centers.
The program provides centers with fortified food such as rice, beans and soy which contribute to school retention rates and children's nutritional state.
This year, ANF and Coca- Cola celebrated this initiative with the children of Colegio Técnico Jésus de Praga in Chiquilistagua. The students enjoyed a cultural act prepared by different grades and a delicious meal.
YO QUIERO MI NICARAGUA LIMPIA
“Yo Quiero Mi Nicaragua Limpia” is an environmental initiative implemented since 2015 by ANF in 12 school centers from the departments of Chinandega, Granada, Managua, Masaya, and Carazo.
The campaign is aimed at elementary and secondary school children and promotes environmentally friendly practices, encourages the good habit of no littering, teaches a proper handling of solid waste and the promotion of environmental values that guarantee the sustainable care of our planet’s resources. In this year alone, 5,453 children learned eco-friendly practices that they passed onto their families as well.
The closure of the 2019 campaign was held at Colegio Técnico Jésus de Praga in Chiquilistagua where students participated in a knowledge bowl competition about the environment and a joyful act filled with music and dance.
