COVID-19 has caused great loss worldwide, but for the second poorest country in the continent the effects of this disease are catastrophic. Nicaragua is facing the wrath of the coronavirus with a weak health system, extreme poverty levels, massive unemployment, economic recession, and uncertainty about the future.
The impact of this situation falls disproportionately on the most vulnerable: people living in poverty, informal economy workers, the unemployed, the elderly, women, children, and isolated communities.
Currently, the crisis brought on by COVID-19 is adversely affecting the levels of poverty in Nicaragua. Hunger is on the rise and access to basic services is a daily challenge.
The destitute live under precarious and uncertain conditions, not knowing what tomorrow will bring. For the working poor, it means facing a difficult decision; if they go out to work, they risk infecting their family and if they do not, they risk going hungry.
